MULBERRY CARTER BAG

Just another reason to love the English bag line, Mulberry (as if we need one): The Carter.  It looks like the Carter is stealing the spotlight from the popular Alexa bag. Celebs like Kate Bosworth, Emma Watson and Kirsten Dunst already added this new gem to their collections!  The Carter comes in three styles (pictured above) and ranges in price from about $1,000-$1,550.

Birkin Legacy

Jane Birkin

WE ALL KNOW THE BIRKIN BAG, BUT DO YOU KNOW THE FACTS?

History: The Birkin is named for actress Jane Birkin. According to Hermes, Jean-Louis Dumas, chairman and president of Hermes until 2007, saw Birkin struggling with a tapestry bag on a flight. Out of friendship, he created a larger bag in 1984 of black supple leather to suit her needs.

Production:
Each Birkin handbag is handmade by one crafsman in France, taking 18-25 hours each.

Design:
The Birkin comes in 25-, 30-, 35- and 40- centimeter sizes. The 50- and 55-centimeter bags are meant for traveling. Colors include black, red, brown, orange, baby blue, navy blue, white, pink and golden tan, and various skins such as calf leather, ostrich, crocodile and lizard.

Cost:
Prices start at $7,200 and vary depending on the finish, lining and hardware (such as feet studs, lock, key or buckle).

Wayuu Taya Foundation

Earlier this summer, before my trip to Panama, I was on a search for the perfect beachy summer bag. As I shopped multiple websites for this special commodity, I came across these brilliantly colored, woven bags and fell in love.  As a grad student of Latin American Studies, I was curious to learn more about the origin of these bags -- were they authentic? was there some sort of fair trade foul play going on? who was behind this? I came to learn that the bags are sponsored by a nonprofit foundation here in New York that uses proceeds to aid the development of the indegenous communities that produce these and other beautiful artisanal crafts.  What an inspiration!

Check them out: http://www.wdhstore.com/wayuu/html/store/category.htm

Happy shopping!
